We will explain the types and names of notes and rests.
note
Musical notes represent the length of the sound
Introducing typical notes.
note | name | length of sound |
whole note | 4 beats --- | |
half note | 2 beats - | |
quarter note | 1 beat - | |
eighth note | 0.5 beats - | |
16th note | 0.25 beats – |
Whole notes are the basic notes.
As the name suggests, a half note divides the length of a whole note into 2 equal parts, so there are 2 beats, and a quarter note divides the length of a whole note into 4 equal parts, so it takes 1 beat, etc.
Although not mentioned here, the 16th note is followed by the 32nd note and the 64th note.
The shape of the notes after the eighth note only increases in the shape of the feathers on the top.
By the way, 4 beats does not mean playing the same note 4 times, it means (keep pressing)
``Then how many seconds is one beat?'', but I'll write a separate article about ``tempo''.
rest
Rests represent intervals in which no sound is produced.
When there is a rest, wait without pressing any keys.
rest | name | rest length |
whole rest | 4 beats --- | |
half rest | 2 beats - | |
quarter rest | 1 beat - | |
eighth rest | 0.5 beats - | |
sixteenth rest | 0.25 beats – |
The regularity is exactly the same as musical notes, but the shapes are random.
In particular, quarter rests and eighth rests are often used, so be sure to memorize them carefully.
After the 16th rest, the shapes of the 32nd and 64th rests will become more round on the left.
The trouble with rests is that "whole rests" and "half rests" are very similar.
You can find many ways to memorize on the internet, but I
“The whole rest is a god, so it looks down on the earth.”
“The half-rest is for the people, so they look up.”
I remembered. . . . It's probably not helpful. . .
Please refer to the memorization methods listed on other sites (lol)
Dotted
Dots are used to determine the length of notes and rests.
A dot is a dot that increases the length of the original note or rest by 1.5 times .
Here are some examples.
notes and rests | name | length of sound |
dotted quarter note | 1.5 beats (1 beat + 0.5 beats) - | |
dotted eighth rest | 0.75 beats (0.5 beats + 0.25 beats) -- |
As you can see by looking at the length of the sound, it has a slightly confusing shape.
For example, a dotted quarter note is a quarter note + an eighth note.
This dot is most likely to appear on half notes and quarter notes.
When you see it in a sheet music, it may be faster to try playing it or listen to an example of how it is played, without thinking too much about it.
※development
Although it rarely appears, two or more dots may be given.
Let me explain with just one example.
The image below is what is called a "double dotted half note."
From what we've seen so far, the length of a normal dotted half note is 3 beats (2 beats + 1 beat).
By adding an additional point to this, it becomes "3.5 beats (2 beats + 1 beat + 0.5 beats)".
The second dot lengthens the note by ``further halving the length of the note extended by the first dot.''
When the third dot is added, the process continues with "the second dot...".
This will rarely come up, but it's good knowledge to have.
