Repeating is now OK! The meaning and usage of the repetition symbol (repeat symbol)

Update date: October 7, 2018

This time we will explain about iterative symbols (repeat symbols). Iterative symbols are popular symbols that are often used in sheet music. When repeating the same melody, writing the same bars over and over again will make the sheet music longer and difficult to read. For example, if no. 1 and no. 2 are the same accompaniment in J-POP, it would be a hassle to write it twice. The one that was able to resolve this was the iterative code. Any iterationBasically, once used, you won't use it the second time. If you repeat it many times, the song won't finish. Of course, there are exceptions, so I will explain based on that.

List of repetition symbols (repeat symbols)

First, let's take a look at the list of iterations. The meaning and usage will be explained later.

①Repeat symbol
②1st parenthesis
③second parenthesis
④Da Capo
⑤Dal Segno

⑦to Coda

Here we will explain the eight typical ones above. There are many, and as usual, it is read in Italian, so it's difficult to get into your mind. For personal enjoymentHow to readNot muchIt's not important。Make sure to remember the meaning。

①Repetition symbol

The most common is this iteration. It is used in many sheet music regardless of genre. It is easy to remember and is designed to be visually understandable.

meaning

symbolmeaning
Back to the front (if there is no particular instruction, it starts from the beginning)
When you come back, start here
It's very simple. Now let's take a look at the sheet music and see how to use it.

How to use

Example I

If the repetition symbols are arranged as shown in the diagram above, what order should I proceed through the measures? The answers are in the order shown below. There is a [Back to Previous] repetition symbol in bar 2, so follow it back. In this case, there is no specific instructions on where to go, so we will return to the beginning of the sheet music. Once you return, you have finished the role of a repetition symbol, so you can proceed from bar 2 to bar 3.

Example II

This is when the return position is specified. This isn't that difficult either. The answers are in the order shown below. Bar 2 has a repetition symbol for "Back to Previous". Also, in the second bar, there is a repetition symbol "When you return, click here" so play bar 2 again. Then you proceed to bar 3. That's the repetition symbol for ①.

②1st parenthesis, ③2nd parenthesis

Next, we will explain ② and ③. This is also visually visible, so it's simple and not difficult.

meaning

symbolmeaning
When repeating with other repeat symbols, the bar advances to the next measure only the first time
When repeating with other repeat marks, the second time the bar advances to the next measure.
It's simple, but it's hard to understand when you look at it. We will explain how to use it together with examples using the iterative symbols in ①.

How to use

example The repetition symbol ① is used in the third measure. The answers are in the order shown below. After the bar in parentheses, the repetition will return to the beginning, but from the second time, it will not go to the third bar, but proceed from the second bar to the fourth bar. These are repetitions that are still easy to remember visually, so if you think about them carefully you will know the order. Incidentally, the second bracket and the third bracket may continue after that. (It's rarely the case) As the name suggests, you just need to repeat the process the third time or the fourth time, so don't panic and check the order.

④Da Capo

From here it becomes less visible. Just like in the math multiplication table, you can't handle it unless you remember it once, so try your best to remember it. Even if you look it up each time, you may remember it naturally. Incidentally, "Da" means "from" in Italian and "Capo" means "first" in Italian, so it is directly translated as "from the beginning."

meaning

symbolmeaning
Return to beginning of song
This is simple. As usual, this will no longer be effective from the second time, so you should repeat it once.

How to use

example At the end of bar 2 there is the Da Capo symbol. The answers are in the order shown below. It's easy. I don't think there's any need for any particular explanation.

④Dal Segno, ⑤Segno

Dar Seño is very similar to Da Capo in ③, so it is a symbol that is easy to make mistakes. "Dal" means "to" in Italian (same meaning as "Da" in ③), and "Segno" means "mark" in Italian. It directly translates to mean "from a marker." Also, Seño in ⑤ is spelled the same as the same, so it means "mark."

meaning

symbolmeaning
Return to Segno
Coming here from Dalsegno
It's simple if you understand the meaning of Italian. Also, as usual, the effect will be ineffective from the second time, so please be aware that you will only need to repeat it once.

How to use

example At the end of bar 2 there is the Dar Seño symbol. Also, there is Seño at the beginning of bar 2. The answers are in the order shown below. It's easy again. I don't think there's any need for any particular explanation.

⑥Fine

His name is "Fine." Please note that it is not the English word "fine". This itself is not a symbol that has the meaning of repetition, but it is used together with iteration symbols, so remember.

meaning

symbolmeaning

or

End the song here (after repeating with a repeat symbol)
It has a simple meaning, but it's Italian so it's not familiar. It is called "Finish" in English. There is a time when the movie says "fin" at the end, but in French it means "end." All of these are changes from the Latin word "finere."

How to use

example At the end of bar 2, there is the Da Capo symbol ④. Let's think about it while reviewing ④. The answer is shown below. I don't think there's any need for any particular explanation. There probably aren't any sheet music like this in reality, but don't accidentally go to bar 2 in ④.

⑦ to Coda, ⑧ Coda

The Italian meaning is "tear, yuu." Be careful as it's a little complicated.

meaning

symbolmeaning
Jump from here to the coda position (after repeating with a repeat symbol)
Coming here from To Coda
I said it would fly, but I guess you could say it warps. It might be faster to see how it is actually used.

How to use

example Just like before, at the end of bar 2, there is the Da Capo symbol ④. The answer is shown below. After returning to the beginning with da capo, there is a ⑦ to coda, so jump from the 1st measure to the ⑧ coda position in the 3rd measure.
